The Ministry Of Commerce Responded To The EU's 'Carbon Tariff': No New Trade Barriers Should Be Formed.

In response to the EU's imposition of "carbon tariffs" in 2026, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Commerce of China said on the 31st that it is hoped that the EU will avoid the formation of new trade barriers.

The European Commission last year put forward a package of environmental proposals aimed at reducing net EU greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55 percent by 2030 compared with 1990 levels, including the establishment of an EU "carbon boundary adjustment mechanism". Recently, the EU Council reached an agreement on the relevant rules of the mechanism. Under this mechanism, the EU will impose taxes on imports of goods such as steel, cement, aluminium and fertilizers from countries and regions with relatively loose carbon emission restrictions, known as "carbon tariffs".

In recent years, affected by factors such as the intensification of international economic and trade frictions, China's steel exports have gradually declined, falling to the lowest point since 2012 in 2020. Due to the low base, steel exports will increase significantly in 2021. According to data from the China Iron and Steel Association, in 2021, China's cumulative export volume of steel will be 66.895 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 24.6 percent .
